"Explore the land of the gaucho." Estado do Rio Grande do Sul by peace_prevails
Estado do Rio Grande do Sul Travel Guide: 460 reviews and 952 photos
I must say, my experience with people from the state of Rio Grande do Sul, or 'gauchos' as they are called was that they have a lot of pride in their people and history - perhaps more than the people of any other region. There is a rich history here, on the frontier between Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay. The people just don't feel like they are different - they are the one state that tried to leave Brazil and form something else.

Lovely photo but please note Gauchos were not the only people to fight for independence from Brazil! Bahia also fought for its independence (Sabinada, 1838). Since the people from Bahia were much more educated, the revolt was fought at the press too.
sorry, but the Swiss had nothing to do with Gramado, I hope you don't mind telling you....but this is a wonderful intro and landscape. RS deserve every bit of attention, and your right, nearly split away from the rest of the country.
