Albuquerque, the state capital of New Mexico, is the home of my great aunt and uncle and various second cousins. We spent a couple of weeks one summer and part of a Christmas vacation there when I was a kid. My great aunt is a great cook, even now at 81 years old. It's always fun to come back and see how much the city has changed but to visit my great aunt and uncle and see that their home hasn't changed at all! They've been living in the same home for 50 years now!
Albuquerque, the home of the University of New Mexico (the Lobos), the center for the 19 Native American pueblos in New Mexico, and one of the oldest cities in the continental U.S., has a lot of history and a culture all its own. The state has its own unique cuisine, not quite Mexican and not quite Tex-Mex. How can you not like a state where at New Mexican cuisine restaurants, you get free sopapillas and honey?!
Whether it's cinnamon rolls at Frontier, browsing the jewelery vendors in Old Town, an espresso shake at Model Pharmacy, a ride through hip Nob Hill, or a trip to the top of Sandia Peak, Albuquerque has something to offer any traveler.
This trip was the weekend break between work trips to two air force bases (Cannon and Holloman) in New Mexico. |
