Dusty Old Town in New Mexico

by Hopkid - last update: May 16, 2005

I've been to Alamogordo twice on business. It's the home to Holloman AFB with their squadrons of F-117A stealth fighters and the gateway to White Sands National Park. There isn't a whole heck of a lot of things to do in Alamogordo although as pointed out on other VT pages they do have an IMAX theater to their credit. Nice coup, that one. There's a decent bicycle shop with a full array of road and mountain bike rides and supplies. Apparently there is quite a group of cyclists in SE New Mexico.

There isn't much to downtown and not a lot on the culinary radar although there are spots that are adequate that don't follow the corporate chain recipe. For that you can go to the fairly new Chili's on the southeast side of town.

But if you find yourself there, do go to the National Park and watch for the Stealth fighters in the air.

Never go to White Sands after a rain! The whole experience of plunging down the dunes is ruined by the transformation of soft pure gypsum into something more like concrete! Great brewpub just up the road in Carrizozo, too - next trip ;-]

Ah yes, I remember White Sands. Took part in some research projects on the Missile Range, not far from the site of the first A-Bomb test. (I don't think it's affected me any...%7) The drive south from Carrizozo is indeed beautiful. Mark
