Gateway to the North Shore

by Hopkid - last update: Apr 21, 2007

Kilauea Point and Lighthouse
Considered by many to be the eastern end of the North Shore, Kilauea is a small former sugar plantation town just off the Kuhio Highway. There is a sign for the Kilauea Lighthouse which will direct you to the access road for this small town. The main attractions here are Kilauea Point and its picturesque lighthouse and the co-located national wildlife refuge. There is also a historic church, a small shopping center, and a few eateries. For plant lovers, there is the nearby Na'aina Kai Botanical Gardens and the Guava Kai Planation as well.

Remember that life on the North Shore should be taken slow so make time to at least stop by the lighthouse, watch the variety of nesting birds take flight, and have a relaxing lunch in Kilauea before rushing off to one of the North Shore beaches for some sun time, tea or tee time at the Princeville resort, or the center of Hanalei for a bit of shopping.
