"Textile Hot Bed" San Antonio Aguas Calientes by Hopkid

The village of San Antonio Aguas Calientes has a reputation for being a hot bed of textile manufacturing. A visit here will definitely give you this impression as there are many vendors selling various items such as clothes, hammocks, blankets, etc., all in the beautiful Mayan tradition. During our visit as part of a tour of villages in the area surrounding Antigua, we were able to see preparations being made for the town's Corpus Christi celebrations, local women washing their laundry in the public laundry sinks in the main plaza, and women creating woven textiles using a backstrap loom.

The fashion department at Virginia Commonwealth University here in Richmond has an annual trip to San Antonio Aguas Calientes to expose students to the tradional Mayan craft of textile production from the creation of thread, the color dyeing process, and the weaving operations. It really is a great experience to see these women at work.
