B.A.R.T: From the airport (SFO) to San Francisco

Getting TO/AROUND: If you want to take public transportation into San Francisco from the San Francisco Airport, BART is the best way to go. $5.15 one way is all it costs. Just get on the train marked "Dublin/Pleasanton" and it will take you into town. Get off at any of the following exits and it will put you in downtown San Francisco: Civic Center, Powell, Montgomery, Embarcadero. Do not get on the train marked "Millbrae". That train heads in the opposite direction.

Your other option is to take a cab, which will cost you around $40 to $45.

Shuttles: Especially good if you have a lot of luggage.

Getting TO/AROUND: The Super Shuttle can take you from the airport to any destination in San Francisco for $15. Whereas it is more expensive than Bart, it is still cheaper than a taxi, and is especially good if you have a fair amount of luggage. They pick you up in a blue van with yellow writing on the sides and will take you right to the door of wherever you want to go.

SF MUNI: Getting Around San Francisco
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Subway/Metro
Getting TO/AROUND: San Francisco has what I consider a good public transportation system. No system is ever perfect, but this one can get you everywhere you need to go. One way fares are $1.50 and transfers are free and good for a few hours. There are two parts to MUNI. There is the bus system, and there is the metro system which runs on a rail.

1 month passes for Muni are $45 and are good from the first of the month until the 3rd day of the following month. So if you are going to stay for a while, or make more than 30 trips on MUNI :-), it might be economical to get a pass.

Cable Cars: The one thing you expect to see in San Francisco
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Other
Getting TO/AROUND: Of course San Francisco is famous for it's cable cars, so go ahead and take a ride. But be prepared to be paying $5 a ride though! When I first moved here it was $3, which was bad enough. But I guess they know that you tourists are coming, so pay up. He he he. ;-)

The Powell/Hyde line takes you from Market Street to Ghiradhelli Square.
The Powell/Mason line takes you from Market Street to Fisherman's Wharf
(both these start off at the same station at Market & Powell)
The California line runs from Market Street to Van Ness and passes through the Financial District, Nob Hill, and Chinatown.

Getting TO/AROUND: Even if you don't need to go somewhere along their route, wouldn't you say it's worth the $1.50 (and time) to take a ride in one of the 34 painstakingly refurbished historic trolleys in service on the "F" line? When was the last time you rode an authentic trolley that was first built 90 years ago? These trolleys have been brought from all over the world from Vienna to Philadelphia. You can't miss them as they roll down Market Street and through the Castro and it's definitely a ride you won't be getting anywhere else!

Also keep an eye open for the "E" line that will open in late 2006. It will provide service from Fisherman's Wharf to SBC park and the Caltrain Depot.

Transportation: Use public transportation simply with this...

Getting TO/AROUND: This is the absolute best website to use in order to plan on how to get anywhere using public transportation through the ENTIRE Bay Area. That means from San Francisco to San Jose to Oakland to Santa Rosa. Just enter the address you are leaving from and the address of where you are going to. You can also modify your search to tell you how to get to a place by a specific time. This is a very useful site and has made my life much easier and saved me money since I was able to take public transportation instead of a cab.

Helpful tip on the stinking rose; i have read a lot about it and was wondering whether it was more of a tourist trap than good cuisine
