Vesuvio Cafe: History on the Beat path...

Nightlife Spot: Vesuvio Cafe
Vesuvio was first opened in 1948 and has had an interesting history since then. It was a hangout for Jack Kerouac and other Beat writers and has stayed the course for over 50 years as a drinking destination for people from all walks of life. It's the best example of a chill bar and a place that never gets wild just for the hell of it. People are here to relax, talk, and think.

The Jade Bar: A chill bar to hang out at

Nightlife Spot: The Jade Bar
The Jade Bar is a small bar that is good to relax at and just have some drinks. There are three small levels and the bottom level is subterranean and has a waterfall of sorts on one side. The place is clean and well set up. If you just want to have some drinks and relax and not put up with any dive bar junk or nightclub insanity, it's a good choice.

Kan Zaman: Break out the hookahs baby!

Nightlife Spot: Kan Zaman
Kan Zaman is a great spot to hang and have a good time at night. Usually full and alive with activity, you can enjoy the food here...but the thing I say is best is that there are so many hookahs here to smoke. In case you didn't know, hookahs are water pipes that you can smoke all sorts of different flavors with like cherry, apple, and many others. The food is good and they also have belly dancers once in a while. It's a great, relaxed setting with coomfortable booths. Just remember that it's rarely empty.

Buddha Bar: One of the best dive bars in the city

Nightlife Spot: Buddha Bar
One night after work, someone else and I decided to go for a drink somewhere. We wandered around and stumbled upon the Buddha Bar. At first there were only 5 or 6 people in there. By the end of the night there were around 20 or 30 packed in there. I also saw the bartender's rear side (apparently he does not like to serve Red Bull), watched him almost pee on an Alfa Romeo, and met a lot of cool and interesting people. If you want a crazy fun dive bar, just come here.

Eating / Drinking: San Francisco's choice of drink...fernet
|

Nightlife Spot: Eating / Drinking
Somehow...and who knows how it got started...fernet has become extremely popular in San Francisco. More fernet is drunk here than in any other place in the United States. And more is drunk per capita than in any other place in the world. Produced with over 40 herbs and spices, this Italian aperitif is usually compared to Jagermeister...or Campari. But really...it tastes nothing like that and is highly original...and to some...extreme. With a definite hint of mint, it's a unique liquor that you will either hate or love. But just remember that a lot of people around the Bay Area love it.

R bar: Woo hoo! Fernet! (Oh God)

Nightlife Spot: R bar
From my understanding the R Bar is one of the main servers of fernet in the city of San Francisco. Overall, the bar doesn't have too much personality that appeals to me and seems more like the 5th place you go on your evening out of getting totally blitzed. So by that point your senses are dulled and who cares how great the bar is anymore! More shots, please! Oh yeah. It's generally rumored that the R Bar is one of the best places to pick someone up in San Francisco.

The Red Room: Well it certainly is...red

Nightlife Spot: The Red Room
The Red Room is a pretty simple place to drink. Of course it has it's name for a reason - the room is completely red. The drinks aren't ridiculously overpriced from what I can remember (isn't it hard to remember the details of the bars sometimes...he he). The only problem really lies in it's size. It's too frickin' small man. Logistically it seems like you could only fit 12 people in there, but for some reason there are always many, many more than that.
