Since I live in San Francisco, I really have no need to be staying in hotels. But my uncle loves the Clift Hotel (he lives about an hour south of The City) and I dropped by one time to hang out.
Unique Qualities: The Clift is one of the nicest boutique hotels in San Francisco, and that is saying something since there are so many of them. The design of the place is almost underdone...quite minimalist I'd say. But what has been done is bold and firm, providing atmosphere that is soothing and modern. When you step inside, you feel the seriousness of the place and know you are in good hands. As far as service goes, their staff is quite professional and willing and prepared to do whatever is necessary. The doormen knew my uncle by name as we exited.

The Commodore Hotel isn't one of San Francisco's greatest hotels, but for the price it isn't too bad. The rooms are fairly basic as are the amenities of the hotel. One drawback I do remember is that there was no a/c and the room got a little bit stuffy in there. However, you could open the window and sit/stand on the fire escape and look down on Sutter Street from the room. The location is not too bad, though a little on the outskirts of Union Square.

If you've done more than a little bit of staying at hostels, you'll know the best thing to find is a clean place that is neat, central, and leaves you little to worry about. I will confess when I first got there and saw that there were two toilets and two showers per floor for 20 rooms of people who had to share, I was expecting the worst. Maybe I got up too early to have to worry about fighting for a shower, but it never became a problem. The only serious drawback I can think of is that none of the 5 computers with internet service there would load the Virtual Tourist page! What's up with that!?
Unique Qualities: internet service on site, laundry on site, kitchen
