Of course the best thing about Napa is it's wine. Why else would you want to go to Napa? Well actually, even if you aren't planning on tasting any wine, there are still great reasons to check it out. (scenery, atmosphere, food, etc.) For a wine novice, it might be a bit overwhelming to decide where to taste, or maybe you are just unaware as to what the best places to check out are. I guess I have become a wine snob to some degree over the past 5 years - I figure that I have tried about 500 wines. Hopefully my tips will help you decide which wineries to check out and which to pass up. |
Also... Just so you know, I decided to put the styles of wines that I like. Maybe that will help you decide whether or not my tips will be valuable to you considering some people like certain wines while others do not.
I like: The deep reds. Cabernets and the sort. I like them heavy and the more sediment on the bottom of the bottle the better. I do not like Quintessa or Opus One. Pinot Noir. You can't beat the easy drinking Pinot. I have come to really appreciate the Oregon Pinots lately. Beaux Freres is one of my favorites. Hearty whites. I like chardonnays with a lot of oak or heavy on the butter. Even though it is a bit played up, I like Peter Michael's wines. Sweet Wines. Oh yes. Give me a port please!! Or an icewine will do. Or a sweet riesling. Or anything along those lines. I love it all.
I like a little less: Merlot in general. I am open to just about anything, but the lower end merlots and even some of the higher end ones just don't do anything for me. Sauvignon Blanc. I will drink it, but will pick other wines over this one unless I am pairing it with food (and will quickly do so since it can pair so well with so many things). Don't hate it, but just don't have a huge amount of love for it. Dry Rieslings. Haven't found too much love for these ones yet. I think I just haven't flexed my palate enough. Or maybe I just never will care for it that much. |
