Augusta is the Garden City. It is also Home of the Masters Golf Tournament. When you come to see the tournament in early April, you understand why it is called the "Garden City". There are Dogwoods and Azaleas everywhere. April is my favorite time to drive around Augusta and look at the beautiful yards. The Augusta National is also alive with Azaleas and Dogwoods in bloom for the golf tournament. Gardening is a popular thing to do in Augusta. There are a lot of garden centers and most any Saturday you will see folks out in their yards making their little patch of ground prettier. Most people here take pride in their yards and in how they look. It's a beautiful city. There are also a lot of great golf courses here other than the Augusta National where you can play golf. In downtown Augusta, there is the Augusta Golf and Garden. It is a beautiful garden with statues of golfing "greats". It's a beautiful place to take a walk on a Sunday afternoon.
In addition to all of the beautiful developed garden areas in Augusta, there are also a lot of natural areas to visit. One of the best is Phinizy Swamp Nature Park near the Augusta Airport. It has boardwalks through beautiful swamps with cypress and tupelo trees. This is a great place to see birds as well as dragonflies, butterflies, reptiles and mammals. The Augusta-Aiken Audubon Society has many field trips to this area during the year.(see their website). Phinizy Swamp Park also sponsors activities here such as bird walks, photography workshops and activities for children. (see their website). Another natural area is Merry Ponds near downtown off Arthern Rd. and Laney Walker Blvd. These old ponds created when clay was mined to make brick are great for fishing($5) and watching nature. Bald Eagles are seen here and it's an important wintering area for ducks. The Augusta levee is another nice natural area for hiking or riding bicycles. A lot of birds are also seen here as well as mammals such as bobcats. I feel we are very fortunate to have so many good natural areas right in Augusta.
There are many popular things to do in Augusta. One popular thing is to meet for lunch. There are a lot of great restaurants here so you could eat at a different place every week for a year. There are also nice museums. The Art Museum is great as is the History Museum. The Science Center is also great for kids. Augusta is in the Bible Belt so many people here attend church and activities at church are very important to them. I sing in the choir at Abilene Bapt. Church which has a wonderful Singing Christmas Tree, Easter Pagent and 4th of July Celebration. These are first class and are attended by many people from the community. It's also a great place to hike or bike in one of the natural areas. It may be the 2nd largest city in Ga. but it doesn't feel anything like being in Atlanta.
- Pros:Augusta is a wonderful place to visit and live.
- Cons:The downtown area can't seem to get it together.
- In a nutshell:I love Augusta, Ga.
