A Birding Visit to the Rio Grande Valley of Texas | Green Jay is resident in S. Texas. Photo-C. Zaffis |
In early April of 2006 7 members of the Augusta-Aiken Audubon Society from Georgia and S. C. traveled to the Rio Grande Valley to bird. We spent 6 days here birding refuges, parks and other areas and had a total of 158 different species. The birds here are different from the rest of the US and are more typical of Mexico than of the United States. There are many refuges here which preserve the tropical habitats of the area along the Rio Grande River which separates Texas from Mexico. Recently the World Birding Center has opened which is preserving more smaller area of good habitat. This area has a sub tropical climate so it's a great place to visit in the winter but is VERY hot in the summer. We had highs of 88-96 degrees when we were here the first week of April. I would like to thank my friend Candy for the photos I used for the S. Texas trip. She took photos the entire time we were here and her bird photos are quite amazing. I have had the places on VT for a month now but am finally adding the photos in early June. |
