Rome, a Melting of the Ancient and Modern

My Rome Trips

View of Victor Emannuel II Bridge
I've been to Rome 2 times. The first was with 3 girlfriends in Jan. 2001. My friend saw an offer on the internet for 7 days including airfare and 5 nights in a Rome Hotel for $599. Insurance, airport transfer & taxes increased that to $750 but that was still a good price. The second time was in april 2004 as part of a 14 day tour of Italy. On this tour we were only in Rome 2 days.

Rome is Easy to Explore

Rome is a fantastic place to explore. On our 2001 trip our hotel was only several blocks from Termini Station which made it quite easy to explore Rome on foot. The tube from Termini is easy to understand. There are so many things to see and do. History, art and architecture are everywhere you look in the old section. Stroll through the many plazas with classical statues and fountains. Go into the many churches. All have wonderful art.
In 2004 our Rome Hotel was way out of Rome so we only got to see Rome when our tour bus took us into the old city. So hotel location is very important to exploring Rome. Rome is a jumble of ancient, medieval, Baroque and modern all fused into one, one thing melting into or next to another. See it all. I think I could go 10 times and still not see it all.

Food Is Great

Food is easy to find and wonderful to enjoy in Rome. One thing to know is that there are many take-away places especially for lunch. If you expect to sit down, you will pay more. So if you want an inexpensive lunch, get food to go or stand at the bar to eat. This also gives you more time to sight-see. Dinner is served late. This is when you splurge and enjoy a wonder sit down meal. Food here is wonderful.
