"Former Blue Nile Province" Wilayat Sinnar by yurxlnc

Wilayat Sinnar Travel Guide: 7 reviews and 76 photos

Sennar Province lies in the Savannah Belt of the Sudan. Although there are some towns, most people live in villages working with their animals or in agriculture. There are forests at every bend of the river where the animals graze. The terrain is slightly undulating and the vegetation tends to be thorny. It has a certain beauty all of its own.

Livestock is very important in the countryside. The sheep are sold at the Eid el Kabir and whenever there is a birth, death or marriage. Goats are kept for milk and meat. Camels are used as transport. Cattle are kept for milk and meat too.
Travelling outside the capital it is inevitable that you will come across herds of animals, and more particularly as sunset approaches when the shepherds and cattlemen bring then home.
It is so common to see the shepherds and herders walking with their stick across their shoulders and being held by their hands,

There are markets held regularly where products are on sale. Many of the handicrafts are made from the mid-ribs of palm fronds which are transformed into food covers, or mats for lying, sitting or praying on. Some circular woven fans are used to help make the flames hotter when cooking, and other round mats with a central hole are used for women to sit on when having a smoke bath [dochan]
