The Sudan has an area of nearly a million square miles. It covers many different zones from desert, savannah and tropical forest. The people belong to different tribal groups [Arab, Hamitic and Nuba ]. The capital is made up of three Towns - Khartoum, Omdurman and Khartoum North. The Blue Nile flows between Khartoum and Khartoum North, The White Nile between Khartoum and part of Omdurman. They meet at the confluence [Mogran] and then The Nile proper continues between Omdurman and Khartoum North up through the desert to Egypt and the Delta to enter the Mediterranean Sea. Travel to and within Sudan is not easy, bt things are improving since the oil industry was developed. The infrastructure is still not aimed at tourists, but they are beginning to trickle in. In February I came across a group of cyclists travelling from South Africa to the Mediterranean. If you have determination, anything is possible, but rather them than me. |

| | Eastern Sudan - Port Sudan Port Sudan is the port of the country where container ships bring imports from all over the world. Nearby is the old port of Suakin where a ferry linking Sudan and Saudi Arabia has a new terminal, particularly busy during the haj [pilgrimage] season. The Red Sea hills provide an interesting background to the town,. Off shore there are spectacular coral reefs where scuba diving can be carried out in the crystal clear water and the wrecks of old ships still lie. This area is dry, but further west and south there are agricultural schemes and forests |
Jebel Kassala the inselbergs of Kassala on the borders with Eritrea, stand out in the desert floor. This area is arid most of the year, but when the rains begin in Ethiopia, the River Gash becomes a torrent and regular flooding takes place. As a result , fruits can be cultivated, and birds can be seen with their bright plumage. | | | Kassala mountains, East of Sudan |
