The new Grand Hotel on Nile Avenue
Khartoum means Elephant's trunk in Arabic. Where the two rivers join at the Mogran and become the River Nile, resembles the trunk of an elephant. There are several bridges across the NIle. The Blue Nile Bridge and Kober bridge link Khartoum with Khartoum North. Shambat bridge links Khartoum North to Omdurman, and the Omdurman Bridge and the New Omdurman Bridge link Omdurman with Khartoum. There are two new bridges under construction. One will link Khartoum with Tuti Island, and there is another to link Khartoum with Khartoum North, the Menshiya Bridge.
Nile Avenue is situated along the NIle embankment. Large old ficus trees give shade, although in recent years may have had to be cut down because of disease. People from the western provinces have also been stripping off bark as they believe it cures malaria, but it damages the trees.
Unless you have lived in places where temperatures soar up to and beyond 45 degrres, you will not appreciate how every inch of shade is precious.
The Blue Nile Bridge
Khartoum has a history dating back to Neolithic times as aremains were discovered at the site of what is now Khartoum Hospital and elsewhere .
It was the site of the death of General Gordon by followers of the Mahdi
The Republican Palace and Khartoum University are two famous buildings from around the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century.
Now there is a lot of development taking place.
The Blue Nile between Khartoum and Tuti
Khartoum is where the Blue Nile and the White Nile meet. The Blue Nile divides round Tuti Island and both Khartoum and Khartoum nNorth stand on it. On the Khartoum side there is a strong embankment as in the flood season, the rivers rises considerably
