Alexandria | all world languages, Alexandria Library |
Alexandria still maintains some of her former glory, and has had a face lift since I first visited. The Corniche has been widened extensively and made safer by the construction of subway passages between the town and the beach. The construction of the new Alexandria Library has been a success, though the modern style of architecture amongst the old Italianate hotels and appartment blocks first takes some getting used to. |
| | The bay at Alexandria is a long curve from west to east. The Corniche has recently been modernised and extended to take 6 lanes of traffic, and subways allow pedestrians to reach the beach. new bridges continue the Italian style . |
In the summer the whole of Cairo [it seems] ups and moves to Alexandria, especially at the weekends. The beaches become crowded with lines of deckchairs and umbrellas from the sea edge to the Corniche wall. | | |
