Saqqarah

walls and entrance to Zoser's complex
Saqqarah is the site of the oldest pyramid, in deed the oldest stone building made by man: the Step Pyramid of King Zoser.
It is also the site of other smaller and less well constructed pyramids, as well as tombs covering all periods of Egyptian history.
Step Pyramid
The step pyramid started out as a brick mastba tomb, but then Imhotep, the architect, extended the mastaba and added more steps until it reached its present shape.
tourism
The Saqqarah necropolis is huge. It appears to have two main sections : the Northern section with tombs and the southern section with pyramids, but this is not a clean cut division.
