Saqqarah is the site of the oldest pyramid, in deed the oldest stone building made by man: the Step Pyramid of King Zoser. It is also the site of other smaller and less well constructed pyramids, as well as tombs covering all periods of Egyptian history. |
| | The step pyramid started out as a brick mastba tomb, but then Imhotep, the architect, extended the mastaba and added more steps until it reached its present shape. |
| | The Saqqarah necropolis is huge. It appears to have two main sections : the Northern section with tombs and the southern section with pyramids, but this is not a clean cut division. |
