Catalina Island is a 1.5 - 2 hour boat ride from San Pedro/Long Beach which are LA's major ports. On the Island you can hike, swim, scuba, golf, snorkel or just lay out on the beach. The main town on the Island is Avalon where most of the shuttle boats go. The main lines are Catalina Express which has relatively fast boats and Catalina Cruises which is known for its slower boats but generally only 30 min slower. There are also faster cats that can make it in less time from places like Marina Del Rey or Newport Beach to name a few. If you have a friend with a boat, that's even better so you can explore the many coves and small bays scattered around the Island
