Armenia - The Middle Land

The rich and the poor

Couple of ladies near Lake Sevan
Armenia is a country caught in the middle of the Caucasus. In Yerevan you will see plenty of movers and shakers or at least that is the impression they would like to give you with there polished up black cars/suvs. Head a few miles outside of the city and you will see how the other half lives. I would call it a bit more rural or an old Soviet ghost town with deserted factories that shuttered with the collapse of the USSR. What is going on here is not unlike most developing cities..you have the young or the more able folks moving to the cities for work and a so called better life and what is left behind is generally an older crowd that is the capable or willing to move and or accept change.
An old boom town

Remains of the past

Old Soviet factory towns litter the country side here and in other parts of the USSR. If you look closely here you can see what is left of an old amusment park and the decaying ferris wheel. It most have been something back in the day when this town was alive running. Now it appears that time is running through it. The windblowsin and out of the numerous broken windows in the factories that once supported the USSR.
While Yerevan feels some what lacking in a past it does not reflect on the rest of the country which for the most part is rich in visable history as most the Caucasus region. Once you are outside the city you will find countless churches doting the hillsides.
