  • While it is exciting to see a painting about which you've heard all your life, the Mona Lisa is behind plexiglass and perpetually surrounded. Do yourself a favor and go down the corridor and see St. John the Baptist by DaVinci. Same artist, but a heck of a lot moodier and, on the whole, completely ignored

At Least Do This: The Louvre is an amazing depository of incredible art. Get the floor plan when you go in and map out your strategy of what to see. The sheer size can overwhelm anyone.

Tourist Trap: Beautiful Art, Claustrophobic atmosphere

  • I may spark the ire of many an art lover, but I find Musee d'Orsay a very claustrophobic space. The artwork is phenomenal, but the space itself is broken up into many rooms and is difficult to navigate, especially when crowded. Hallways end abruptly and I liken the rooms to cubicles.

Dining and Drinking: Bofinger - Why all the fuss?

  • My Bofinger experience is probably the most disappointing of anything in Paris. I went there with three friends, all of whom spoke French. We were seated in a small, windowless room on the second floor which was crowded with other Americans ONLY. The food was mediocre, at best and while the service was formal, it was severe. I was not impressed. Read Patricia Well's review of Bofinger in "Food Lover's Guide to Paris". It hits the nail on the head.

At Least Do This: I should have asked for a different table, which I did not. Try asking a local in the boulangerie or the patisserie where they would eat. I've gotten some great recommendations.

Nice beginning to your Paris page. I totally agree with your comments regarding the French and Americans. Paris is one of my favorite cities and I intend to return as much as possible.
