"Karlsruhe - Town of my study life" Karlsruhe by gubbi1
Karlsruhe Travel Guide: 895 reviews and 4,115 photos
Karlsruhe has been my home for several years. I was studying at the Technical University and did my degree in Electrotechnics. Strangely is that during that time (came into VT later) I did not take any photos. Probably it is the psychology of living somewhere. This I realized after moving away from Karlsruhe and Gothenborg, where I also lived for 2,5 years. Well nowadays, fortunately, I can say that I have learned and that I take photos whenever there is an opportunity. Thanks to the technic of digital cameras...
So due to the fact there will be the great Euromeet next year in 2008 it came to my mind that I could share some ideas about this interesting town.
The town is in my eyes the perfect size to have a good amount of cultural events (e.g. 'Das Fest' a very popular music weekend in July) and sites (e.g. the castle, the media museum ZKM). Lots of students are around from the different colleges and Universities. There is the College of Higher Education (FH), the Technical University (TU), the College of Education and the conservatory (Musikhochschule). This huge amount of students (during my time about 10% of Karlsruhes inhabitants were students) is of course influencing the night life and cultural events.
Beside downtown there are several bigger and smaller villages around, which were incorporated by Karlsruhe. Most of my time in Karlsruhe I spent living in Durlach, 5 Kilometer east of downtown. This part of town is older than downtown Karlsruhe (construction started 1715) and in fact the origin of it. Margrave Karl Wilhelm of Baden-Durlach founded the town. He ordered a design of the town in an absolutistc shape with the castle in the center and streets leading away creating a fan shape. Still nowadays it is clearly visible that the towns streets form a fan, which does not make it easy to find a parked bike, cause you can see the castle in most of the streets in downtown and so you are clueless where it might be.
What I liked in Karlsruhe was the climate. It gets very hot in summer due to is location at the river Rhein and the hills of the Black Forest starting just a little south and its counterpart in France, the Vosges. So periodes of 30-35 degrees and thunder storms are pretty usual in summer. Beside that I like the many bike routes through the town and the surrounding landscape. I made bike tours even into France which is about 30 kilometers away. Lots of small lakes (relicts of gravel industry now naturelike areas) invite for a rest.

The picture is a screenshot of Google Earth showing the downtown area of Karlsruhe. Clearly visible the fan structure of the town.
This is a photo of Karlsruhe-Durlach.
- In a nutshell:I studied here several years!

Hi Christian, I enjoyed meeting you at the Glühwein meeting. I never knew Karl Dreis was a native of Karlsruhe -- he's one of my heroes, of course. Also Heinrich Hertz, but I'm not so happy about Carl Benz's invention. (I'm an ADFC member, are you?)
I have been 3 times to Durlach now. I quite like it there.
Nice page! I've just been in Karlsruhe for the VT Glühwein Meeting... a pity you haven't been there too!
