"Culture packed city of Evora" Évora by gubbi1

During my roadtrip around the Southern half of Portugal I skipped Evora knowing that I would come here at the end of my trip as an excursion with the Euromeet in Cascais. The town of Evora is quite large compared to most of the places that I visited during my trip and offers a lot of different interesting things to see, no wonder as Evoras historic center is declared as a World Heritage. Most known is maybe the Chapel of Bones in which the walls are covered with bones and skulls... a rather strange but somehow fascinating place when inside.
The large cathedral in town is also very beautiful and an important Gothic monument in Portugal. We had a look at the cathedral and the attached cloister that gives a fantastic view on the building complex. From here you can see the large round window decorated beautifully. The Cathedral of Évora was built between 1280 and 1340 and its design followed the floor plan of the cathedral in Lisbon.
During dinertime most of the VTers gathered to eat or take a rest, but I decided to have a look at the interesting park in Evora. It has been constructed in 1863 to 1867 in a romantic style. Many exotic plants can be found here and 'fake' historic ruins are placed to make the park even more romantic. This can also be seen on paintings of this periode, but I can't remember to have seen this in real architecture.
For the group photo we travelled back in time to the roman periode. Evora has a temple ruin called Diana Temple probably dating back to the first century. Its columns are almost 8 meters in height. It is a nice place and pretty close to Evoras Pousada.
After the visit to downtown we took the taxi for a trip even further back into the past. Outside of town there is a huge collection of megaliths from 4000 to 3000 BCE. It is called Cromlech Almendres and consists of about 95 granite monoliths. The Cromlech Almendres is the largest structured collection of menhirs on the Iberian Peninsulae and one of the largest in Europe.
Evora is listed as an UNESCO World Heritage. The description on the UNESCOs page says the following:
This museum-city, whose roots go back to Roman times, reached its golden age in the 15th century, when it became the residence of the Portuguese kings. Its unique quality stems from the whitewashed houses decorated with azulejos and wrought-iron balconies dating from the 16th to the 18th century. Its monuments had a profound influence on Portuguese architecture in Brazil."
