Iceroad or Lössi to Hailuoto

My first time to be on Hailuoto is during the Easter days 2008. From a colleague at work I heard that the ice street to this island is currently still open and as I planned to avoid the big Easter traffic I decided to start here.
Hailuoto is a pretty young island arising from the ocean after the big icemasses of the iceage have disappeared and the preasure is released. The whole region around Oulu is currently still in a constant process of gaining altitude. On the island are about 1000 people constantly living, but house are wide spread. My day took me via the ice street, which is a real adventure for me, to the island and then further to the western end at Marjaniemi. There you will find a small harbour and a lighthouse. Beside the lighthouse is a hotel with a cafe and a camping ground. The area is nice to walk along the beach and to watch the frozen ocean in winter time. It is really impressive to see the ice reaching the horizont and partly forming small hills. In summer Hailuoto is excellent to do walks on the many nature trails, which you can find marked on the maps hanging out at different locations on the island.

Unbelievable what a change! I returned to Marjaniemi recently to show my brother the island Hailuoto. Now in summer everything looks very different and Marjaniemi changed into a summer holiday destination.
Our plan was to have a look at the lighthouse here and then head further for a walk to the next laatu (lean-to shelter with fire place) to make some bbq. Therefore we took some sausages with us. Like in almost all laatus also here firewood was provided. Fortunately I knew that mosquito season had started a couple of weeks before so we had the most essential liquid with us to protect ourselfs. That way the whole walk was no problem and fortunately my brother was not scared away by those nasty little creatures. We had a great time.
To ge to the Laatu you need to follow the duckboard starting at Marjaniemi southwards. Afer about a kilometer you will need to turn left and follow the path away from the sea. There from here there should be signs pointing to the laatu. The whole track is about 2,5 km and leads through dry wood and through some wet areas with more duckboards. The laatu itself is in the wood close to a lake, but it is not visible.
