"Gravehills --- remnants of the past" Hjelmeland by gubbi1

Hjelmeland Travel Guide: 10 reviews and 19 photos

Driving northwards from Joerpeland towards the town of Hjelmeland I passed a sign pointing to an archeological site. I had time and stopped to have a look at it. The place is an assembly of 22 gravehills of which 17 are round ones and 5 are long. Of the round ones the largest have a diameter of 11 to 15 meters with a height of 1,7 to 2,5 meters. The long gravehills have a length of 8-20 meters and a width of 4-6 meters. Most probably these graves date back to viking times from 800 to 1050.
