The name of the town Ursberg is derived from 'Berg des Auerochsen' (Mountain of the Aurochs). It is a relatively small town with a long lasting history. In documents from 1104 Ursberg was first mentioned. Just later in 1126 to 1128 the Premonstratensian Monastery was founded with the help of St. Norbert which then stood under the protection of the Emperor. Immediatly after the monastery was completed other Premonstratensian Monasteries were founded in the region, like the monastery in Roggenburg. Knights and influencial people joined the monasteries and donated their land and goods to the community which grew fast.
In 1802 then the Secularisation forced the monks to leave and the monastery went into the hands of the Kingdom of Bavaria. 82 years later in 1884 the cleric Dominikus Ringeisen bought the monastery for 20.000 Goldmarks and established an institution for handicapped people. This social institution, Dominikus-Ringeisen-Werk, still exists today and is one of the largest in Southern Germany.
When you come here to Ursberg you will notice large building complexes which are the Dominikus-Ringeisen-Werk. In the middle you will see the church tower of the St. Johannes Evangelist, the former Premonstratensian Abbey Ursberg. If it is open, I recommend to have a look at its inside, which is very beautiful. The interior of the church was changed to baroque by Joseph Dossenberger the younger in the middle of the 18th century and in the same periode the frescos on the ceiling added by Jakob Froeschle and Konrad Huber.

Oh even better! Not only looks the church marvellous, I can also buy a new handmade basket at the Dominikus-Ringeisen Werk :-)
I still have to explore Bavaria.... Best regards from Ukraine, Christian! ><><><
