Candela - CLOSED: NYMAG ASSIGN: Candela
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Restaurant Name: Candela

The first thing you notice about Candela are, of course, the candles, which are everywhere, even suspended on iron chandeliers above your head. It makes for a fabulous last-minute date option with its moderate prices, abundant seating and a great something-for-everyone menu (you really can't go wrong!). NY Metro, my magazine, recommends "try getting a spot up front if you'd prefer a cozier feel; the cavernous, darker back room can get noisy." Most of the menu is described as American Nouveau, so think steak and sushi (yumm....I'm getting hungry now. haha). Also, their pre-theatre menu is pretty good.

Pre Theatre Menu: Daily, 5:30-6:30 PM, three courses, $19.99
Brunch: Sun, 11:30-3:30PM, $12.99, all you can drink, $16.99
    Happy hour: Mon-Fri, 5-7 PM, two-for-one drinks; $5 martinis; $3 draft beers

    Outdoor dining is available!

Favorite Dish: The Asian BBQ pork chop ($18) and the spicy chicken dumplings ($7)! So delicious, try the dumplings especially!

Tocqueville: NYMAG ASSIGN: Typical NY attitude at Tocqueville
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Restaurant Name: Tocqueville

The two owners, Jo-Ann Makovitzky and chef Marco Moreira, just moved their Tocqueville restaurant a few door down 15th Street to get more space. And they got it. Tocqueville is a very eye-pleasing restaurant, with a glass-walled mezzanine, an impressive dining room and modern, classy decor. Where traditional french meets american modern, tocqueville designs it completely.

While being a perfect spot for a private formal party or reception, it's very romantic and they hav ea full bar, this restaurant, I'm sad to say, absolutely screams NY attitude. You really have to dress to impress to walk in here. While Marco, the chef, seems like a perfectly genial person, Jo-Ann simply was the epitome of the Devil Wears Prada. Even the hostess looks down on customers if they aren't dressed to the nines. I can deal with these people rather well, but I hate dealing with it at all. So unless you're prepared to nibble (because that's what you'll be doing when you come here, that's how good the portions are), and dressed head to toe in Dolce, then don't bother.

Sigh. I'm sorry, I like friendly, comfortable, cozy restaurants, if you haven't noticed from my other restaurant tips. If you like posh attitudes, then go to Tocqueville, because it is very pretty. and they have fun fur lockers! :-)

Favorite Dish: when you're on a date, really...does one actually eat?! haha. good of cocktails and hors d'ouevres....

And the menu changes about 6 times a year, with the season...

    Cafe Reggio: Cafe Reggio
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Restaurant Name: Cafe Reggio

I love, love, love this little Greenwich Village cafe. Located right on MacDougal, this tiny little Victorian styled cafe is very, very personal, intimate, romantic, good for singles wanting to catch up on a good book, for dates, meeting with friends, etc. It's also a bit famous. Latest film was In Good Company with Scarlett Johannsen (who attended NYU and lived in the Hayden dorm, right up the street on Washington Square West.)

The Italian Renaissance decor is inspired by Caravaggio and the Medici family. Beautiful wall murals and iron seating makes for romantic atmosphere. I should know. I used to come here with my boyfriend all the time. After we broke up, I came here alone. Then I started coming here with friends. All I can really associate Cafe Reggio with is love. Romantic love, self-love and friendly love. :-)

Favorite Dish: The cappuccino, cafe latte, the Earl Grey tea, all the drinks are delicious. I've never actually eaten there...

Chat 'n Chew: NYMAG ASSIGN: Chewin' and Chattin'....
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Restaurant Name: Chat 'n' Chew

Very cozy, warm...choice home cooking foods. It's very casual, excellent for a Saturday/Sunday brunch. The atmosphere is great, being really casual, friendly with eclectic decorations it matches the food, I think. Try to get outdoor seating, which is limited but nice. The owner, Andrew Silverman who also owns Steak Frites and Sushi Samba, takes a comfortable, homey-comfort food twist on his restaurant empire. He's getting new decorations in this summer to add to the coziness of this restaurant, one of my personal favorites.

Besides outdoor seating, this restaurant also offers a singles scene, kids' menu, brunch/weekend, delivery, kid friendly, alchol and full bar. They are open till midnight every day.

Favorite Dish: THE MACARONI AND CHEESE IS AMAZING! ($9.95) It perfectly cheesy with a crispy top, and you can get it with bacon or chicken. And their brunch is also quite amazing. But their Mac and Cheese is to die for. For Real. They are also famous for their Coca-Cola cake, which is a thick, fudgey cake made with Coke syrup. ($5.25) Also, try the BLT ($7.50) and the Thanksgiving on a Roll. ($9.95)

    Mamoun's: Mamoun's - Cheap, Good Falafel
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Restaurant Name: Mamoun's

Mamoun's is known for providing NYU students and local Village residents with their share of falafel at $2 a pop (a little more of the schwarma and the kebabs). Not only is Mamoun's cheap, it's a fast, easy, convenient and YUMMY (which is the key). Sometimes you start to really CRAVE falafel and schwarma, well, at least, I know I do! And Mamoun's is always the answer. Or if you're travelling on a budget, it's a perfect way to get filled up without spending a fortune.

Mind you, the place is a tight little hallway type restaurant, with about seating for four people and two different tables so be prepared to buy your food and go (tip, head to Washington Square Park to sit and eat, al freco! Enjoy the street performers and enjoy your falafel!!)

Also, be prepared to order quickly. It's NY so everything moves fast. Know your order before you order it. Or people will start yelling....

Favorite Dish: The falafel, schwarma, and the kebabs. And some apple juice!

"""Don't wear all white sneakers. It bothers me so much when tourists wear those.""" Bothers "me"? I don't think tourists are looking for ways to please you but to have a general filling about how the city behaves.

Running away from home to a Marriott? Your poor parents. You must have been a handful.

youre partially wrong on this. while im sure some are scams, plenty of reputable salons do this. bumble and bumble (a very upscale expensive salon) has free cuts/colors if you model your hair - the tend to approach people on the street.
