Algarve

"OLA Everyone"Attached are just a few pictures taken in the Algarve last year, when we stayed at Porta da villa apartments in Lagos
period was from 10th July to 3rd of August 2004,weather was very good no rain and ranged from 30 at the start to 40 degrees two days before we left. food was very reasonable and we had a great time. The only thing we would have changed was that we hired a car through the uk agent when there is car hire available in Lagos.
The beaches are fine sand and the water crystal clear.
If you get the chance go out on the Dolphin Safari boat from Lagos, well worth it and saw dolphins both times we went, they have a very good track record of finding the Dolphins and the boat is very Fast. Secondly go to Cape St Vincent one evening and watch the sun go down

Lagos

There are several interesting statues erected to the famous figures of the past that are associated with the history of this town. None more controversial that the sculpture of Dom Sebastião standing in the main square in front of the Town Hall. A more recent statue commemorates the Algarve’s only Saint, São Gonçalo de Lagos, who was born in 1360 and died in 1422 in Torres Vedras. Pope Pio VI raised him to Sainthood in 1778. The town’s more recently constructed Marina presents a lovely picture and this harbour is practically the first sight a visitor has of Lagos. Besides the boats that find it convenient as a permanent mooring it is usually full of yachts passing on the way or returning from the Mediterranean and the Americas. At the entrance to the harbour is the "Forte da Bandeira" which was constructed in the 17th Century.

The municipal council has constructed near to the centre of the town there is a reasonably modern Cultural Centre in which various exhibitions and culturally related events are held during the year. In the Marina visitors will find different boat tours, yacht hire, and deep sea-fishing outings that can be booked. The food is very good and a wide range of tastes available.
If you go to main square in lagos in the evening there will normally be various acts to see,all free.As you can see in the photo, this chap came around serenading with his accordion and his cute little dog collects the money in a plastic cup,
lowering his head for you to reach.

Travels

if you go down towards the harbor at Lagos you will find several guides that will take you for a tour to the grotto's or caves along the coast.
They are very friendly people and gave us a running commentary on the different rock formations and there names or what they resembled.well worth the trip and lasts approx 45mins.
The Chap in the photo was our guide, and very good he was too, stopping to enable us to take photos and explaining everything in detail.
impressive natural harbor. The nearby beaches are among the best in the region and the rocky headland of Ponta da Piedade is outstandingly beautiful.
View the magnificent rock formations surrounding this area from a small fishing boat, with a local fisherman as your guide. The distinctive cliffs that surround the Lagos area are truly a sight unseen!

Your guide will navigate around and under the intriguing rock formations, take you into caves and point out the many secluded beaches that surround the town.
These trips depart at regular intervals from the main walk way, or alternatively, catch a boat directly from the beach from Praia Dona Ana or at Ponte da Piedad - generally the charges here are better too.

Travels

If you do decide to go on the dolphin safari you really need to book the day before , as they tend to be very busy. picture of the boat alongside, this is a purpose built boat or RIB and is very safe the captains are very experienced.
if I remember correctly it is capable of speeds approx 40knots nice when its hot, just for the breeze, don't worry you shouldn't get sea sick either.
Dolphin Watching is one of the most exhilarating experiences that any of us will have in our life time. The dolphin's relationship with man has been documented throughout our history with many civilizations telling stories of how this magnificent creature has come to our aid in times of trouble; protecting us from sharks or even guiding us through dangerous seas. Sadly, most people only ever get to see the dolphin in captivity but Dolphin Seafaris have been providing tourists to the Algarve, the opportunity to see the dolphin in its natural environment, since the year 2000.

Travels

The Dolphins ,what can I say ,a glorious site to see in their natural environment.
The people,I can say that it was a joy to meet and speak to the local people, although I do not speak Portuguese nearly every one we spoke to spoke English, but it was fun learning some of the phrases.
OBRIGADA being one.

Lagos

"What a place to relax"
The town square, always something going on. it is a very relaxed atmosphere and I look forward to going back again sometime.
I think personally that Lagos has got it right , A bit of everything for everybody.
I just hope it dos not get too commercial and changes too much.
