"Caves, Castles, Ottomanesque" a Slovenia Travel Page by haysnoe

If you have only a few days in Slovenia, the capital city is worth a day. The area around Dragon's bridge is ecclectic with interesting shops and cafes and a vibrant young social scene in nice weather. I climbed up the hill to the castle and found the audio-visual presentation in the theater most enjoyable. The view must be the best in the city, though Ljubljana is known for hazy air conditions so long-distance views not common.

If you have more time, there is a large wooden park up on the hill behind the library that looks like would be great for a long walk.

Visiting Predjama Castle was one of the highlights of my traveling life. It is possible that the nearby Postonja Caves get more publicity but those were only mildly interesting as caves go and the castle is living history and in the most unique of settings. Much inside is not original but the self-guided tour was fascinating and the views from inside are spectacular. Fun to imagine what likfe was like there for the renegades inside - who, despite being blockaded by the Austrians for years, still had access to the outside world through a network of caves in the rock behind their fortification. There is even a jousting arena out front and a river that disappears under the cave into the rock below.

Loved this place and would like to return.
