On Saturday we met up at Bonn station where we would take the Ahrtal train to Mayschoss, a very picturesque village and the start of our wine crusade.
The Ahr valley wines have earned the title "Red wine paradise", it is Germany's smallest wine regions with approximately 550 hectares of vineyards, but saying that it is the largest single area in Germany which cultivates grapes for red wine. Its climate is almost Meditteranean in feel getting on average 1500hrs of sunlight a year. You can understand this whist travelling through the region as the area is in a sheltered pocket. The variety of red wine grapes is Spatburgunder & Portugieser. |
| | This first stop is where the "Rotweinwanderweg" or Red Wine Trail begins covering 35km through the valleys of Bad Bodendorf to Altenhar. At our first stop there was the option of taking the chairlift up to the Ditschardt mountains to get a lovely view of the valley, unfortunately it was a bit overcast so we decided to stick to the "Ahruferweg" Riverbank trail.
I could easily see why this area is popular with hikers, walkers and mountain bikers alike.
Our wine crusade took us to several festivals which were being held to celebrate the harvest. |
