Restaurant Name: Gasthuys
This is my all time favourite eat cafe with great value for money. In the evenings you can select the dish of the day for a reasonable price and usually accompomied by frites with mayo and a delicious salad. If its good weather there are outside tables next to the canal its a fairly quiet area as its at a T-Junction. You may also get the opportunity to meet the resident black and white cat who loves any attention.

Restaurant Name: Humphreys Restaurant
I was just so impressed with this restaurant it is fairly large but divided into 3 rooms so it still gives an air of intimacy. The furniture is dark wood with chandeliers, there is a long bar at the entrance. The menu is 3 courses for Euro 22.50 (as at 2009) & the food is fantastic - but remember to book. There is usually several seafood choices as well as 2 vegetarian choices for mains. We sat near a book case filled with old books
Favorite Dish: I had staters of spinach salad with bacon, asparagus & sundried tomatoes Main course was hunks of beef cooked in a hungarian sauce Dessert was lime key tart with cream

Restaurant Name: Smits koffiehuis
It was a lovely warm day so we chose to eat here outside on a balcony overlooking a canal it was very pleasent & from time to time the canal buses stop here so great viewing platform to tourist watch. It is by the station so nice & convenient for a bite before heading off to Schiphol. Be warned though the service was very slow. I had to double check my bill & found I had been charged for a extra beer although there was no problem sorting this out even though the girl had finished her shift
Favorite Dish: I had a uitsmijter ham & kaas for Euro 5, this is a traditional dutch dish of white bread with melted cheese over ham & 2 fried eggs on top. My friend has a green salad with smoked chicken, pinenuts & bacon Euro 6

Restaurant Name: Italian Restaurants / Pizzeria
We did not actually go into this restuarant but we did have a look whilst enquiring for Han's birthday. They do a cabaret around the tables some singing & music. The menu is a set 2 courses. the setting is very romantic, it is candlelit even at lunch times
Favorite Dish: The starters is antipasta, the main meal is a choice between 8 pasta dishes No artificial flavourings are used

Restaurant Name: Soup Kitchen
This is anew concept in amsterdam, the soups are all homemade & delicious Actually there are a number of places just doing homemade soup but this franchise will do the whole caboodle. The sandwiches are huge so don't be fooled when ordering I ordered the special for Eur 6.50 which turned out to be a spinach soup with red pesto stirred in, including 3 slices of homemade bread + a huge brown bread beef sandwich - more like half a loaf.

Restaurant Name: First Class - Grand Cafe Restaurant
This is the Grand Café Restaurant situated on platform 2b of Amsterdam centraal station. The décor is beautiful it is dimly lit with an illuminated bar in soft green with various delft ornaments. Near the bar is a pretty white parrot who seemed to take a dislike to one of the staff. We had the menu of the day for Euro 28.50 which was starters: melon & parma ham, mail succulent beef cubes in a stroganoff sauce with veges & potato croquettes & a divine white chocolate icecream to finish. The atmosphere & service are top class

Restaurant Name: In De Waag
This dates back to 1488 formally known as St Antoniespoort forming part of the citys fortifications. Later it became the city’s weigh house. The octagonal tower was added in 1691. Public executions took place here from early 19th century as Louis Napolean thought it was too gory a sight for his palace on Dam square. In later years it has served as a fire station, a place for the city archives as well as an assembly place for Jews awaiting deportation. Today it houses a restaurant which is illuminated by huge medieval candelabra wheels, the staff use the chain to lower the wheel & light the candles before raising it to the roof again. We enjoyed a roast chicken ciabatta & croquettes on white bread with hot choclate & mint tea which cost us Euro 18.50

Restaurant Name: De Eetkamer van de Jordaan
Yet another fab VT meet at this restuarant - maybe VT should take commission :-) I had the chicken with a lovely stuffing served with potato croquettes, asparagus & veg For starters melon & parma ham with shavings of lovely dutch cheese - yummy Then desert was a delectable chocolate mousse with whipped cream. Be aware that cream in Holland is usually sweetened The house wine was good & Swanet & myself certainly got stuck in :-) They charge Euro 2 for ciabatta & herb butter something we overlooked
