Home of Miffy / Njintje

Utrecht is a beautiful city with the same charms as the canals in Amsterdam but with a slightly more mellow feel. Utrecht manage to keep their water levels constant and are able to have cafes at the canal level there’s nothing more relaxing then having a beer at the waters edge. This is vt’er Roggeveen's hometown and he happily showed me around the city for the second time. A chapel turned into a pub, a historic graveyard and a country walk was just some of the places we visited together.

On my first visit Walter took us Nieuwegein to have a look at a housing community project, which was really interesting especially after my trip to Christiana, Copenhagen.

We stopped off at Vreeswijk to visit the newly opened shipping museum which is still a working shipyard. Inside you’ll find the history of Vreeswijk, some of the equipment they used in building the boats as well as a replica of a cabin. The people running the museum were very friendly and spoke excellent English and were eager to show us around & the museum as well as give a detailed account of the background as the information inside is in Dutch. One boat in the yard is being worked on to convert it into a house boat.
We met up with another vt'erTingTing Johan at Utrecht central and stopped for a bite of lunch along the canal bank.

We took a stroll through town passing St Maartenskerk which led me to learn about the Calvanist rampage in Holland & the devastation it caused. We did visit a museum open house day which seemed to be very child friendly, we felt a bit out of place and continued onward.

Utrecht was home to Dick Bruna who created that adorable little rabbit Miffy, she is known to the dutch as Njintje.
