Fancy a day outside of London then this may be just the place to visit, a historical university town steeped in acedemic history and indeed it has been a home to Royalty and best of all its only an hours train ride from Paddington, London.
Besides this city hostin 39 independent colleges it also is home to the 400 year old Bodleian library which is famed for being one of the greatest libraries in the world and with 120 miles of occupied shelving who would argue. Incidently it is in this library that they filmed the library scene in Harry Potter with Hermoinie. |
| | Currently there are 20,000 students studying in Oxford coming from 138 countries and Oxford is noted to have the lowest college drop out rate. Of course some of their graduates go on to be great people and here is just a small list Michael Palin, Rowan Atkinson, Tony Benn, David Cameron, Bill Clinton, Richard Curtis, Hugh Grant (wonder if they knew each other then) Professor Stephen Hawking, C.S Lewis and JRR Tolkien - of course this is just a small list from the 20th centuary. |
| | So this is another city Han & I have explored together and it was a great day out comparable definetly to Cambridge which as another university town is great. Unfortunately we did not get to go punting as there was far too much of a queue but we did stroll by the river & watch some silly people make a hash of it. |

icunme Wed Sep 23, 2009 13:45 UTC Outstanding page, Jo, in your usual outstanding style. Really hope to see this all one day. <(•¿•)> | breughel Wed Jul 29, 2009 13:20 UTC Thank you for your explanations about Oxford. I felt always confused with the "colleges" system of Oxford. Here we are used to an administrative division in "facultés" like sciences, philosophy, medicine, etc. Students live in rooms or flats in the town. | bijo69 Sat Feb 28, 2009 12:49 UTC Going to Oxford soon, so thanks for the great tips!!! | garridogal Mon Sep 29, 2008 18:08 UTC Well, they're not too friendly at that Brassnose College, huh? Great page. |
