Christ Church Cathedral: Christ Curch cathedral
  • Tip Rating:
  • This cathedral is very large & many artifacts have survived in the crypt.
This cathedral is C1030 although lots of restoration work has been done.

A donation of Euro 5 is requested & you can take photographs inside.

The unusual item in this cathedral is a glass case holding a mumified cat & a rat, the cat was chasing the rat in around 1860's & got stuck in an organ pipe. When they were discovered the cat & rat were in a perfect mumified state

    Dublin Castle: Dublin Castle grounds
  • Tip Rating:
  • Behind the castle is a fantastic garden which has a sort of stained glass snake like fountain. There is also a memorial to Veronica Guerin who was assinated in 1996, due to her extensive investigation into Dublin's crimeworld.

The georgian courtyard shows the scales of justice appearing to have her back to the city perhaps to say Justice is for the rulers of the country only.

I did not go inside but I'm sure its very interesting, open on wknds between 2 & 4.45pm & mon - fri 10am - 4.45pm
A guided tour costs Euro 4.50

    Kilmainham Jail: Kilmainham Gaol
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Gaol was built in 1796 on a hill with the idea that the fresh air would be good for the prisoners, although no glass in the windows & porous limestone walls illness quickly spread.

Men & women were kept separate in the Gaol & even children were sent here for petty crimes luck stealing potatoes. One man was held for 7 years for stealing a cart wheel. Photo’s were taken with a mirror to get the side profile.

14 leaders of the 1916 Easter uprising for Irish independence were held & executed here. Joseph Plunkett got married to Grace Gifford & executed 2 hours later.

The East wing was modernised & it was known as the all seeing eye. Prisoners were not allowed to talk & there were carpets on the floors outside the cells so prisoners could not hear the footsteps of the gaurds.

During the famine the jail was overcrowded, sometimes up to 6 in a cell made for one, people were committing crimes so as to get their 2 small meals in jail

Sometimes they have art galleries in the Jail cells of the East wing

Entrance into museum & guided tour is Euro 5

St Patrick's Cathedral: St Patricks Cathedral
  • Tip Rating:
  • Saint Patrick on his journey through Ireland is said to have passed through Dublin. In a well close to where the cathedral now stands, he is reputed to have baptised converts from paganism to Christianity. To commemorate his visit, a small wooden church was built on this site, one of the four Celtic parish churches in Dublin

    Admission Euro 4.50

    Monday - Saturday 9am - 6pm
    sunday closed between 11am & 1pm, 3pm - 4.15pm

there is a virtual guide on the website
The gardens next to the cathedral are very nice & landscaped.

There are some intersting gargoyles on the outside of the building

    Ha'penny Bridge: Ha'Penny bridge
  • Tip Rating:
  • Up until 1919 the toll to cross th Liffey was a half penny & this was Dublin's only pedestrianised bridge until 2000 when the millenium bridge was erected

The bridge is in cast iron & has decorative lamps adorning it.

A rather more romantic way to cross the river although it is rather narrow.

    Monuments / Statues: Molly Malone
  • Tip Rating:
  • Molly is at the bottom of Grafton Street, affectionately known as "the tart with a cart"

The statue portrays Molly as a busty young woman in seventeenth-century dress, and is claimed to represent the real person on whom the song is based. Her low-cut dress and large breasts were justified on the grounds that as women breastfed publicly in Molly's time, breasts were popped out all over the place

An urban legend has grown up around the figure of the historical Molly who has been presented variously as a hawker by day and part-time prostitute by night, or, in contrast, as one of the few female street-hawkers of her day who was chaste

Thanks to Mariajoy for the photo, it was so busy around the statue it was impossible for me to take a decent one

    In Dublin's fair city,
where the girls are so pretty,
I first set my eyes on sweet Molly Malone,
    As she wheeled her wheel-barrow,
    Through streets broad and narrow,
Crying, "Cockles and mussels, alive alive oh!"

    "Alive-a-live-oh,
    Alive-a-live-oh",
Crying "Cockles and mussels, alive alive oh".

    Now she was a fishmonger,
    And sure 'twas no wonder,
For so were her mother and father before,
And they each wheeled their barrow,
    Through streets broad and narrow,
Crying, "Cockles and mussels, alive, alive oh!"

    (chorus)

    She died of a fever,
And no one could save her,
And that was the end of sweet Molly Malone.
Now her ghost wheels her barrow,
    Through streets broad and narrow,
Crying, "Cockles and mussels, alive, alive oh!"

    (chorus)

Monuments / Statues: Hags with Bags
  • Tip Rating:
  • To get a picture of these ladies stroll stroll up Henry street which is a pedestrianised street, apparently the cheaper shopping area then Grafton street. Take the next left towards the HaPenny bridge

So much to see! Hope to go there someday. A weekend would probably be not enough though. Nice page, loved the cathedrals and the street statues with their nicknames. :)

I certainly never want to stay in that hotel! But I would like to return to Dublin one day as I haven't seen much but then again I'd rather see the countryside and castles ;)
