Cape Town Warnings Or Dangers
Sort by: Most Recent | Best Rated | Author's Order

Driving / Car safety: Windows Closed, doors locked
  • Tip Rating:
  • Most cars in SA have air-con so don't wind your window down & drive with your arm out even if you did fancy that one arm tanned look.
It is not safe to do this.

Secondly make sure all the doors are locked when driving & try make sure the remote opens only the drivers door instead of all 4 at the same time. Someone can jump in the back.

Providing you take precautions it is safer driving in South Africa

    Warnings Or Dangers: Black Taxis
  • Tip Rating:
  • Be warned when people speak of black taxis in South Africa they do not mean reputable black cabs as in London.

These taxis are usually beaten up minibuses which hold maybe 12 people but they cram 20+ inside. I heard of a case where the driver was steering the car with a lead pipe.

Someone hangs out of the sliding door yelling destinations whilst the driver cuts up everyone in his path, hand on the horn. Not suprising there are many accidents and fatalitys involving black taxis. They are usually in a bad state rusting & dented

To be avoided at all costs I think its fair to say

Safety at night: Jump the traffic lights
  • Tip Rating:
  • When driving at night & you are concerned that the area is secluded it is a known fact that south africans drive up slowly to traffic lights (robots) & go straight through a red traffic light if it is safe to do so.

It could be that this saves a possible hi-jacking. Of course if its busy this is not acceptable.

Safety at night: Park in lit area
  • Tip Rating:
  • Remember to park in a lit area or perhaps a busy underground parking.

Often in Cape Town there are car guards who look after your car for a small price and also give an added bit of security for the area.

The car guards are usually pretty friendly avoid those that try & help you park at a meter then swindle extra cash out of you during the day.

There is a pricing error for the main dishes as you have reisgestererd them in British Pounds instead of South African rands. The prices in Pounds are way off. IT would never cost that much. Jill
