Bangkok; city of shopping, food and hectic, crazy traffic. It took an incredibly long time to get anywhere due to the traffic.

Also the city of smog. We couldn't believe how bad it was. The smog here was way worse than Los Angeles, London, Beijing or Xian. This picture belies how bad it is. We had a bit of a panic attack about the state of the environment on our visit here, especially when we got to the industrial areas and watched black, bubbling water with a horrific stench slowly moving along the gutter after pouring out of the tanneries etc.

This is sunset in Bangkok. The sun's rays are masked by the smog, so that the sun looks like a pink moon. When we flew out of Bangkok, the smog all but totally blocked the city from view. One day we only had visibility for about 3 or 4 kms from the hotel window.

This is the view we had from the riverside bar at the Shangri La Hotel where we stayed for some drinks on a very clear Bangkok afternoon. We caught a ferry from here across the river to the Peninsular Hotel for dinner. Very enjoyable.
