"The Ancient Centre of Asia" Nakhon Si Thammarat by Tina-Perth

Nakhon Si Thammarat is a province with great historical value, not only to the Thais, but to ancient Asia. It was seen as the spiritual centre of a coastal kingdom called Srivijaya, which was composed of areas such as the Maya Peninsula, Western Borneo and Sumatra. It is located in the south of the country and borders Surat Thani to the north and Phattalung and Satun to the south. It stretches down to the Gulf of Thailand, covering around 9,000 square kilometres.

Nakhon has been settled for at least 2,000 years and is the port where the current form of Buddhism practised in Thailand was introduced. There was once a majestic city wall, built of small terracotta coloured bricks, which was about 2 feet wide. Some of the wall still remains. It was here, in Nakhon Si Thammarat that the current "Jatukam Fever" erupted. Jatukam is an amulet created back in 1987 with supposed powers of generating wealth, protecting the wearer and general good luck.

This is a strong tourism element in Nakhon, but generally not any westerners, the tourists are Thai.

This province is extremely beautiful. There are caves, waterfalls, pristine beaches and a clean, open city. There is even sea golf. Between April and July, with low tides, one of the bays drains completely, leaving a flat, sandy bottom where the locals play golf. There is also an annual tournament!

Hi, thanks for sharing with us the making of Jatukam. I have one that is a gift from my Thai friend's mom. I didn't know about the story of the princes until I read your page. :-)
