Charlottesville is a small city in Virginia that is famous as the home of Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States. Jefferson lived just outside Charlottesville in a mansion named Monticello, which is located on top of a hill overlooking the town. It is definitely worth a visit, as is the University of Virginia, which was founded by Jefferson after he retired from government service. The University's main feature is The Lawn, its historic core, which Jefferson designed to function as an academic village, with housing for students and faculty located among the classrooms.

The homes of two other early US presidents are also located near Charlottesville and are open to visitors. Ash Lawn, the home of James Monroe, is located just outside of the town, while Montpelier, James Madison's home, is located north of Charlottesville, near Orange.
