"Great desert scenery with no crowds." Top 5 Page for this destination Grand Staircase - Escalante National Monument by mikelisaanna

Grand-Staircase Escalante National Monument was established by President Clinton in order to preserve a large section of Southern Utah from development, particularly mining. It is a huge wonderland filled with great desert scenery, including numerous canyons and ridges. The area is famous for its slot canyons, which are extremely narrow canyons (often less than 5 ft wide) than can be hundreds of feet deep. There are very few paved roads within the boundaries of the national monument, which keeps the crowds away. However, there are plenty of dirt and gravel roads that you can explore with a four-wheel-drive vehicle. We spent a couple of days wandering these roads, and were rewarded with some amazing scenery. Often we would go for an hour without seeing another vehicle or other sign of human habitation. There are also plenty of trails for hiking out into the backcountry. We loved the sense of space and quiet that being alone in this vast area provided.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Great desert scenery and open space with very few people.
  • Cons:Tougher to explore than other Utah parks. 4WD highly recommended
  • In a nutshell:Get away from the crowds and enjoy some great desert scenery
