Amherst is a town of about 10,000 people in Southern New Hampshire that traces its history back to the 1600s. The center of Amherst is laid out in classic New England style, with a town green surrounded by a church, courthouse, and school. The center of town also features a number of historic old homes, with many dating back to the 1700s. A number of famous Americans spent time in Amherst. Daniel Webster practiced law there, President Franklin Pierce was married there, and Horace Greeley ("Go West, Young Man") was born there. Amherst was the county seat of Hillsborough County until the 1860s, when Nashua and Manchester took its place as co-county seats. |
