Ketchikan is a lumber and fishing town on the Southeastern end of the Alaska panhandle. It is best known as a stop for cruise ships coming up from Seattleand Vancouver, and has become a bit of a tourist trap, with most of its shops selling merchandise geared toward tourists. For some reason, jewelry seemed to be the dominant theme - why one has to go all the way to Ketchikan, Alaska to buy jewelry mystifies us!

However, if you can avoid the urge to shop, there are a number of interesting things to do in Ketchikan and the surrounding area. If you are into nature, the Misty Fjords National Monument has plenty see. For a dose of Native American culture, visit the nearby town of Saxman, a Tlingit tribal town that has an interesting collection of totem poles and an active totem pole carving workshop. Another place to see totem poles is nearby TotemBight State Park.

Other interesting things to do in Ketchikan are the lumberjack show, which features a number of sawing and climbing contests, and the local museum, the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center, which is small but great for kids, with a lot of interesting exhibits about the nearby Tongass rain forest and the surrounding area.

One thing to keep in mind about Ketchikan is that it is one of the rainiest spots in America, with over 150 inches of rain per year. Bring your umbrella!
