Sveti Stefan is a unique island/hotel on Montenegro's Adriatic coast south of Budva. Formerly a village, all of the buildings were acquired by the Yugoslav government and turned into an upscale hotel during the Tito regime. Each house became a room or rooms of the hotel. The old Sveti Stefan hotel also had restaurants, shops, three churches, a casino, and a swimming pool. It hosted many celebrities over the years before it gradually fell into decline. Tourists who were not staying at the hotel could visit the island for a fee, which was around 5 Euros.
After Montenegro achieved independence, its government sold the island/hotel to luxury hotel chain AmanResorts, which worked for a few years on transforming it into a super-upscale resort, with room rates exceeding $500 per night. We have not been to the island since then to see the fancy new hotel and aren't sure if tourists can still access the island if they aren't staying at the hotel.
- Pros:Interesting buildings, gardens and winding streets.
- Cons:Now an extremely expensive luxury hotel
- In a nutshell:One of the more unusual hotels in the world

Don't think that I would have spent 200 Euros never mind 500,
Looks beautiful but way too pricey.....
Interesting to have a look "inside" Sveti Stefan! We always stayed outside! Thanks for sharing!
