Hluhluwe Game Reserve Travel Guide: 94 reviews and 246 photos

Hluhluwe-Umfulozi is a large national park in South Africa's KwaZuluNatal province. It is not as well known as Kruger, the larger national park to the north, but offers the same wide range of animals on a more manageable scale. Hlhluwe has all of the Big 5 animals (lion, leopard, elpephant, cape buffalo, and rhino), as well as hippos, giraffes, zebras, cheetahs, warthogs, impalas, kudus, and many others. We spent a day touring Hluhluwe and saw plenty of wildlife, including two groups of lions. The one animal that we were not able to see was a leopard, which tend to come out in the evening.

Hluhluwe is easy to navigate by car. It has paved and gravel roads that you can drive on throughout the park. One section of the park is reserved for safaris on foot (no roads, cars forbidden), but the rest is very accessible.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Good variety of animals to see, not crowded
  • Cons:Not as much nearby lodging as Kruger has
  • In a nutshell:A scenic national game reserve with plenty to see
