| A view of Selcuk in the distance |
Selcuk is a town of about 20,000 people in western Turkey near the Aegean coast. Selcuk began as the successor town to Ephesus, the legendary Roman city that was the capital of Rome's Asia province. Ephesus had been a seaport. Then, its harbor silted up and it was rocked by earthquakes and pillaged by invading armies. Eventually, it was abandoned in favor of a site a couple of kilometers further inland, which became the present-day town of Selcuk.
Today, Selcuk is a pleasant town that is nice place to stop on your way to and from Ephesus and the coast. The highlight of Selcuk is the Ephesus Museum (Efes Muzesi in Turkish), which boasts an impressive collection of statues and other artwork and artifacts that were excavated from the ruins of Ephesus. Selcuk also has the ruins of a large Byzantine cathedral and a hilltop citadel. |
