We stayed in Sipitang for three or four days and stayed in an SFI-owned house not far from the paper mill.

We led a quiet life with good meals and a few beers - with karaokee - in the evenings. We got to learn some of the locals and enjoyed our stay.

The big thing is the wednesday evening market and we were told not to miss it. It was extremely crowded. All stalls under a tin roof and quite dark inside. Generator sets were running everywhere to produce electricity for light.
A cry that we could hear all over the place was "Almablasch!" - we never figured out the meaning of it. We will probably go there again to find out - or not.

Eat all fruit you can find. It is cheap and good. Even the durian - the forbidden fruit? - tastes OK once you gets used to its odour.

Sipitang is a perfect place if you want to do absolutely nothing at a budget price. We never tested diving (too old, we think) but the location seems right - at the shore of the South Chinese Sea.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:You do not see many Europeans
  • Cons:People stare at you - you are "colored" - in their eyes.
  • In a nutshell:Quiet, neat, kind. Good value for money.
