I've lived in just outside Toronto my whole life, and have only started appreciating how amazing this city is in the past few years. Toronto is a typical big city--skyscrapers, shops, and TRAFFIC. But what makes this city unlike any other place on earth is the people. We come from all walks of life, from every corner of the globe, and we learn and share openly. It feels weird to say that Toronto is a tolerant city, because tolerance is not something we think about. That's just how life is. |
Toronto is a cosmopolitan city. As the largest city in Canada we have towering skyscrapers, fabulous shopping, museums, theatres, parks, and a vibrant nightlife. What Toronto has that many other big cities doesn't is relative safety. This is not to say that crime doesn't occur, but I feel safe walking alone downtown, even at night. You can sit down on the subway and leave your purse on the seat next to you and it will still be there when you get off.
One of the best things about this city is the food. If you're after a particular cuisine, you'll find it in Toronto. Yearning for gyros? Head for the Danforth. Is dim sum your thing? Chinatown. Longing for linguine? Our italian community is the largest outside Italy. Ethnic restaurants have sprung up everywhere and the food is tasty and inexpensive. |
The Hockey Capital of the World That's right. I said it. Toronto is the world's #1 hockey city.
I know the Montrealers are absolutely rabid about their Habitants, and Detroit has 'Hockeytown' painted onto centre ice at Joe Louis, but really, no comparison.
Hockey pools for the next season start as soon as the Stanley Cup is won. Bars are packed to the rafters on Saturday nights. Not a day goes by that the newspapers aren't commenting on Pat Quinn and the boys in blue. The ACC seats 19 700 people...18 500 are reserved for people with season tickets, and waiting list for a seat licence is something like 15 years long.
If the Leafs ever win the Stanley Cup (HA! As if that will happen in my lifetime), I really and truly believe the city will shut down. We're that crazy. |
