New York

by Small_World - last update: Feb 6, 2005

I was in NYC last week (Jan. 25-29), right after their big snow storm when it was 5 degrees. I have never been so cold!

I got the leis (made from actual flowers) from the Today Show staff, who were handing them out to the poor frozen souls who were waiting for their 5 seconds of fame in the weather report that morning. Later I noticed that the leis were clinking together -- they were frozen! Nothing like wearing ice cubes around your neck, but I was too cold to take them off. I didn't even care that I looked like a tourist with the leis on.

But I loved every minute of it. And the leis were great conversation starters. The guy in the picture with me was trying to sell me the hat with braids attached that I'm wearing (notice he has on one too), as well as something else I'm too naive to mention (I cropped it out of the picture).

I don't think I really made it very far into Chinatown, but it was far enough for a cold tourist. Maybe next time I'll do less of the touristy Today Show things (my friend made me go with her) and more of the real city.

I've been to NYC five or six times, but the time I went as an accompanist for someone who was trying out for AMDA was the most exciting. Mainly because I became separated from the gal I was supposed to accompany (I lost her in the Monroe airport, which has only three gates!) and she was the one in charge of our accomodations. I could write a book about that trip. But, alas, there are no photos to commemorate it because I was trying to be too careful not to look like a tourist by taking photos.

It was an amazing trip in many ways. And I bet I am the only person in the world to spend a weekend in NYC on less than seventy dollars.

Pros:"I love the people and the history and the activity. Each part of the city has a different personality."
Cons:"It is way too expensive, and it is hard to let down your guard there."
In A Nutshell:"A lifetime wouldn't be long enough to explore this place."

Nice NYC pages Susan. One of my favorite cities. As for New Orleans, two trips there in the last six months. It's coming along. I'll get the page done sometime soon. Thanks for your visit and comment.
