Location and history.

Highley station SVR
Nearest large town(s)/city: Bridgnorth or Bewdley.

Highley is a small ex coal mining villiage between Bridgnorth and Bewdley. In the 1860's business people decided to build a railway line between Shrewsbury to link Bridgnorth and Bewdley up with the Great Western Railway line to Worcester and beyond to Oxford and Reading and eventually, London for trade purposes. The Severn Valley Railway steam preservation line is part of what remains of that railway line. Steam engine hauled tourist trains now run on a weekly (Daily in Summer) basis, and stations have been restored to 1930's style.

In the days when I had lots of time to spare, I was volunteer Station Master here for a while (Unpaid). Although this is a preservation line and nothing to do with the main network, things such as safety are still paramount and to get to be Station Master, you still have to go through all the exams of competancy.

There is a connection to the main line railway network at Kidderminster.

Eardington is currently closed.

What's the current weather like in Bridgnorth (Link), which includes Highley and the Severn Valley?

To help you find Highley, I have provided a map in the Highley 'Travelogue' at the bottom of this page.
At Bewdley SVR.

A link to Highley's past

One of the coal wagons donated by British Sugar to the Severn Valley Railway was painted up in the old Highley Mining Co. livery and thus preserving a link to the past.

A reminder of Highley mining.

A memorial to the miners of the Highley area.

There were many coal mines situated along the now picturesque Severn valley.

Having seen Highley on the Severn Valley, how would you like to take a look at the next station down 'the valley'
of Arley?
