Transportation: Alicante (FGV) Railway Station

'Mode': TO,AROUND
Category: Train
Getting TO/AROUND: FGV stands for Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Valenciana. Which means, basicly, Valencia Railways.
Alicante is the terminus for the narrow gauge railway propper. However, the tram, (or Tranvia), runs further on down along the promenade to the harbour. This picture is of the original terminus station building and is adjacent to the sea front.
The air conditioned diesel trains run from here up through Benidorm right up to Denia.
A train trip to Benidorm takes about an hour but beware. Whilst Alicante's railway station is right on the sea front, Benidorm's is not. It's right at the top of a hill and about a 15 - 20 minute walk down to the sea front - and remember it's all uphill on the way back!
History: The railway was originally built by a French company in 1914 to provide fresh produce to Alicante. The total track distance from Denia to Alicante is 93kM.

Getting TO/AROUND: Alicante Airport is only 15 minutes from Alicante itself by taxi which in 2001 only cost €11.
Our hotel was very good in calling a taxi for us when we were due to return home.
