Sella, inland from the Costa Blanca.

A villiage in the mountains.

Sella.
Local Sella (Spanish) time: UK + 1 hour.
Currency: the Euro
Language: Spanish (Catalan)

Sella is a small villiage that was visited by accident.

Nearest large town(s)/city: Alicante or Benidorm.

Staying in Benidorm and having hired a car, we wanted to see what was at Elche and Santa Pola. We went. Coming back from Santa Pola, as I was navigating, I told Richard the driver of the day to turn next right.

Zoooom, he sailed straight past the turn. I asked why. He told me that it only looked like a small road. I replied that it WAS SUPPOSED to look like a small road and to please turn NEXT right, as I had just seen a road sign in thousands of kilometers for MADRID!

He duly turned right at the very next road junction and that brought us back toward the coast and Benidorm - via the mountains!

Getting thirsty, as I do, I asked if we could stop at the next villiage. That next villiage was Sella. We called at a lovely little bar (name escapes me), and took refreshment at prices much cheaper than in the tourist metropolis of Benidorm.

I remember grapes growing from the pergolas in the courtyard where we sat at tables in peace and quiet and gorgeous scenery. I also remember the toilet facilities being a bit basic. An earthenwar sink type afair in the ground with two raised portions for your feet and a hole. Above was a tank with a chain pull. If you pulled this you got a shower as that is what it was FOR! It could very well have woken me up!
Roman bridge.

Roman in the gloamin ?

This a picture of a Roman bridge over the Rio Sella.

I am told that Sella is very popular with mountaineers and outward bound activity enthusiasts. I didn't see any when I was there. Only a German family making a pit stop the same as us at the same bar.

The bar had a very overgrown playground and the little German lad was loving it and a crying match ensued when his parents decided it was time to go.

Pros:"Peace and tranquility."

In A Nutshell:"Mainly unspoilt when I was there."
