Getting TO/AROUND: I never thought I'd have the guts to do this, but I guess it's quite common in St. Petersburg. If you are walking around town, and you want to get from one place to another quickly, just stick out your hand and someone in a car will pull over. They will ask where you want to go, and if you are going their way, they will take you along if you kick in a few rubles. Make sure you agree on the price before you get in. I wouldn't recommend doing this by yourself, only with another companion and only if the car is empty except for the driver.

    Metro: Taking the Metro

    Category: Subway/Metro
Getting TO/AROUND: The Metro was easy for me to take, especially since my friend knew exactly where she was going. If you can't read the signs, count the stops on a map. That way you'll know when you need to get off. Also, the cars can get pretty crowded. Just shove your way on and off like everyone else. Don't wait for a less-crowded car to show up, or you may be wait there forever!

Getting TO/AROUND: As I have mentioned elsewhere in my list of tips, the Metro stations in St. Petersburg are very decorative. They reminded me of the interiors of little palaces.

    Metro: Inside the Metro

    Category: Subway/Metro
Getting TO/AROUND: The escalator ride down to catch a subway car in the Metro is about three minutes long. The subways a pretty deep! Stand to the right if you are riding on them, because the left side of the escalators are for people who are in a hurry and want to climb up or down the escalator as it moves.

    Buses: Buses or Trolleys
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Other
Getting TO/AROUND: There are also many buses and trolleys people can take to get around St. Petersburg. They are cheaper than taking the Metro, but they will take you a little bit longer to get to where you want to go, because they have to make many stops on the way.

    Outing: Walking
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Other
Getting TO/AROUND: No matter where you go in St. Petersburg, you will find yourself walking, walking and more walking. This may get tiring, but it allows you to see the sights and absorb everything better than you would if you were to use other forms of transportation. Watch where you walk, though, because drivers on the street won't slow down while you cross, and sometimes the roads and walkways can be pretty rough.

    Metro: Filming at the Metro

    Category: Subway/Metro
Getting TO/AROUND: One day, when we went to one of the Metro stations, we saw a group of people filming a movie outside it. I don't know what movie it was, but I'd like to know so I could see it, just so I could say, "Hey, I saw them filming that part!"

    Transportation: Horseback
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Other
Getting TO/AROUND: This person was offering horseback rides around St. Petersburg. I kind of felt bad for the horse because I'm sure there are other places she'd rather be, and with the traffic being as crazy as it is in St. Petersburg, I would think that you are just asking for trouble by trying to maneuver around it on a horse!

    Transportation: Gondolas!
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Other
Getting TO/AROUND: St. Petersburg is called "The Venice of the North," so why not have some gondolas? For a fee, you can take a gondola ride up and down some of the canals in St. Petersburg.
